Shanzhai 山寨 is a Chinese term for a counterfeit product that is easily accepted as the actual thing itself. In China there is a common practice of suspending judgment around authenticity, and allowing a copied object to have its own reality, its own validity. This series explores this philosophy (Zhexue 哲学) of simulated realities using inflatable objects in natural surroundings. The symbolism is related to images with double meanings in Chinese culture and are used as cryptic protests designed to get past government censorship.
